I’m Erin Shadowens, an award-winning classroom teacher and author of Critical Thinking in the Elementary Classroom: Engaging Young Minds with Meaningful Content. On my first day of teaching, I didn’t check the weather report before recess and got locked outside in the rain with a class of second graders. In the years since that inauspicious beginning, I have taught every grade from kindergarten through third, where I have been repeatedly humbled and inspired by the children and adults around me. Teaching is an art form, which requires patience, a courage to face failure, and a profound reverence for the minds of children. I believe in the capacity of school communities to be little utopias and to represent a vision for a better world.
